DIPHTHERIA: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, affecting the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. While largely preventable through vaccination, it remains a cause for concern.

Symptoms

Diphtheria symptoms typically appear 2 to 5 days after exposure and may include:

  • A thick, gray membrane covering the throat and tonsils
  • Sore throat and hoarseness
  • Swollen glands (enlarged lymph nodes) in the neck
  • Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
  • Fever, chills, and general tiredness
  • Nasal discharge

How It Spreads

Diphtheria is highly contagious and spreads through:

  • Airborne droplets: Coughing or sneezing from an infected person.
  • Contaminated objects: Sharing personal items like tissues, towels, or utensils.
  • Skin contact: Direct contact with an infected wound.
  • Unhygienic living conditions: Especially overcrowded areas are prone to the spread of the bacteria.

Prevention & Treatment

Prevention is key, and vaccination remains the most effective measure. The diphtheria vaccine (DTaP for children, Tdap for adults) is part of routine immunization schedules. Regular booster shots every 10 years help maintain immunity.

For those infected, early treatment with antitoxins and antibiotics like penicillin or erythromycin is crucial. Delayed treatment can lead to severe complications, including heart and nerve damage, or even death.

What You Should Do

  • Ensure you and your children are up to date on vaccinations.
  • Avoid close contact with infected individuals.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
